Expedia commissioned GfK, an independent market research company, to poll travelers on who annoyed them most when they traveled by air. Passengers were not limited to one answer. The results are in and the rear seat kicker “wins” with inattentive parents coming in closely behind.
- Here’s a list of the top 14 “annoying passengers”:
- The Rear Seat Kicker (cited by 64% of respondents)
- Inattentive Parents (59%)
- The Aromatic Passenger (55%)
- The Audio Insensitive (49%)
- The Boozer (49%)
- Chatty Cathy (40%)
- The Queue Jumper (35%)
- Seat-Back Guy (35%)
- The Armrest Hog (34%)
- Pungent Foodies (30%)
- The Undresser (28%)
- The Amorous (28%)
- The Mad Bladder (22%)
- The Single and Ready to Mingle (18%)
My Most Annoying Passenger
All 14 categories on this list resonate with me. #3 is particularly bad — I have a flight review coming later this week about a man who I sat next to on a 10-hour flight who stank. It was perhaps not as annoying as someone kicking my seat after I started breathing with my nose, but terrible feeling when there is no escape from the foul stench of body odor.
Perhaps merged into the “Chatty Cathy” category is seatmates who want to have one-sided discussions on matters of religion.
And of course some are so rude (or oblivious) they cannot even be bothered to walk to the lavatory to change clothes. That’s more amusing than annoying.

But all hope is not lost. 79% agreed that “for the most part, fellow passengers are considerate of one another,” and 74% even claimed to “thoroughly clean their space before leaving the plane.” I’m not sure what that means…I gather all my belongings, but I don’t wash down my seat…
What about you? What kind of passenger annoying you the most?
