The Heathrow Express offers a convenient way to travel between LHR and London Paddington Station in 15 minutes flat. Now you can enjoy a complimentary upgrade to Business First Class with a Star Alliance Gold card, a value of £18 on a return ticket.
Admittedly, the differences between “Business First Class” and the standard cabin are limited. First class enhancements include:
- Extra legroom
- Spacious worktables
- Free newspapers and magazines
Both cabins offer power outlets and complimentary wi-fi.
In my experience, however, the most valuable thing about traveling in Business First Class is fewer people.
To take advantage of this deal, simply buy a standard ticket and take a seat in first class. Be ready to show both your ticket and your Star Alliance Gold card.
Two items from the fine print are striking. First, the offer is only open to those 18 years of age or older. I’m not sure why — I hope my son will be a Star Alliance Gold member before he turns 18. I also doubt that will be strongly enforced for kids aged 16-18.
Currently children 15 and under travel for free:
Kids aged 15 years and under travel free in Express Class when accompanied by a paying adult, or can travel unaccompanied if they have proof of air travel such as a valid flight booking or boarding pass. Proof of age may be requested. Kids aged 15 years and under travel free in Business First only if accompanied by an adult who has bought a Business First ticket. Kids cannot travel unaccompanied in Business First.
Second, the offer is open-ended, with no termination date announced. Apparently this offer has been around since February 2016, but I was just made aware of it thanks to Fraser on Flyertalk.
It’s a small upgrade, but a nice one — if you have a Star Alliance Gold card and are traveling on Heathrow Express, just take a seat in first class next time and show the fare inspector your card.
