United Airlines is introducing UNO Pizza to its onboard menu next month. The big question: will it be good and how will United keep it from being soggy?
Pizza, like hamburgers, tends to be a crowd-pleaser. It’s simple comfort food that most people find satisfying. Starting on July 01st, United will introduce pizza to its Bistro on Board menu, available on all flights within North America, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean over 3.5hrs.
United will use Uno and offer a spinach and garlic deep dish pizza for $9.99.
We heard from our customers that they wanted a pizza option onboard so our Foods team got to work to select a great pizza. We chose UNOs not only because of our hometown connection but because UNOs is a recognizable brand across the country and … more importantly, it was also the pizza that had the best taste. What makes it even better was that the size of their personal deep dish pizza fits exactly into our skillet dish which thoroughly cooks the item while maintaining that crispy crust onboard.
By skillet dish, United means this–
This is what the eggs in the morning or pasta in the evening currently are cooked and served in. Apparently, the pizza fits perfectly in here. United says–
It’ll be prepared and served in our skillet dish to help the cheese brown and keep the crust crispy.
Want a beer with dinner? You can enjoy a “Pizza and Beer Combo” for $13.99. The beer will be Miller Lite.
United has tried pizza before (I wrote about here) and it is was terrible. This looks much better, though.
Might the pizza start showing up as a snack in first class? United tells me it is possible, but for now it will just be available in economy class.
Note this also will not serve as the free hot meal on premium transcontinental flights, but be available for purchase in addition to complimentary meal.
I’m looking forward to trying the pizza. I’ll have a follow-up post on other changes United is making to its buy-on-board menu next month.
