It may be my first and only trip on Alitalia, but I’m ecstatic it will be from Rome to Los Angeles instead of Rome to Mexico City. Who would have thought that Alitalia would open up an award seat to LA?
Truly, it has been at least a couple years since I’ve seen Alitalia business class award space to Los Angeles. It seems to be a popular route for the beleaguered Italian carrier and I assumed Alitalia saw no reason to release award seats.
In fact, we’ve experienced a persistent drought of Alitalia premium cabin award space over the last year, with East Coast award space also drying up. All I’ve been able to find lately is space to/from Mexico City. That’s still a great use of 48,000 miles (one-way) or 80K miles (round-trip) for business class.
But I just happened to be checking award space on ExpertFlyer and there it was…one seat in Z-Class on the exact date I needed it. You can bet that I had it booked within moments.
One of my favorite lines in LA sports history is Vin Scully’s comment after Kirk Gibson’s miracle home run gave the Dodgers a 4-3 win in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series:
In a year that has been so improbable the impossible has happened!
And in a way I feel like this is exactly what happened to me. I’m thankful to be flying non-stop into home rather than via Mexico City. What a pleasure it will be to arrive home a half day earlier than expected!
