In an unexpected moment on an already historic last flight, a man proposed to his girlfriend on the upper deck of United’s 747.
It was just after lunch and passengers were beginning to stream upstairs to view the upper deck. A young couple named Sean Worsely and Christine Ellis came upstairs. TV cameras were upstairs already capturing FAs in retro uniforms.
Worsely’s grandparents were on the very first United 747-400 flight and he and his then-girlfriend decided to take the final journey in honor of them. Little did Ellis know that Worsely had something else in mind.
Worsely put on a microphone, ostensibly to be interviewed about being on the final flight, but instead took a knee and proposed to Ellis.
United’s new head of MileagePlus, Luc Bondar, was on the upper deck as well and warmly congratulated them. Later in the flight he congratulated them over the PA system and added that United would provide their honeymoon tickets. (No word on whether their honeymoon will be capacity restricted to the Lower 48, but I doubt it!)
It was truly a nice twist on a flight that was already filled with many surprises.
I proposed to my wife at a Greek restaurant in Frankfurt. While not quite as iconic as on the upper deck of a 747, we all have stories that we can look back and smile on. Congratulations to Christine and Sean. The 747 may have just flown its last journey, but yours is just beginning!
