United Airlines and BP are partnering to offer you the chance to earn and burn and miles at the fuel pump.
On the earning side, you can earn up to three miles per gallon purchased by linking your MileagePlus number and form of payment to a BP Driver Rewards account:
- One award mile for every gallon of fuel purchased
- Two award miles for every gallon of fuel purchased with a linked debit or credit card
- Three award miles for every gallon of premium-grade fuel purchased with a linked debit or credit card
Note this does not have to be on a United-branded credit card. Any linked credit or debit card will work. And that’s critical because the United-branded credit card is not a great card to place fuel purchases on. Instead, link to a card such as the Chase Freedom by Chase. This card offers quarterly bonus categories where you can earn up to 5x rewards during promo periods (five Chase points, which is equivalent to five cents back per dollar spent). Other cards routinely earn you a 2% cashback reward on fuel.
With the new BP-United partnership, you can also burn your miles to save on fuel at a rate of $0.50/gallon using 60 miles/gallon. Don’t even think about it…
I value United miles at 1.5 cents each. Your miles get you less than a penny per gallon if you burn them for fuel. There are far better uses for your miles.
200 Free United Miles
You can earn 200 free United miles after joining the BP Driver Rewards program and making your first fuel purchase with a linked credit card.
You can sign up here.
When properly stacked, the BP-United partnership is a great way to earn additional miles. But use this program to earn miles, not burn miles.
