Hello from Honolulu. Turns out I made it home last night. It took some wrangling, but I got rebooked in First Class from Chicago to LAX and made it home about two hours later than planned. This was after being told there was no way I could make it back to the west coast that day because “every flight” was sold-out.
The flight was wonderful—excellent dinner and tremendous service—but the evening was dampened by another UA baggage screw-up. I rarely check bags and last night again showed me why I don’t.
I was scheduled to fly from SDF-ORD-SFO-BUR yesterday, but my ORD-SFO flight was cancelled and with storms approaching Chicago, UA preemptively cancelled many flights.
With my new flight not leaving till 1830, I had nearly a five hour layover in Chicago. As soon as I arrived, I had an agent put a note in the baggage system to re-tag the three bags I had checked. She assured me five hours would be more than enough time to locate the bags and even “guaranteed” the bags would arrive with me at LAX.
They didn’t. Thankfully, they went to Burbank and by the time I got to BUR, the flight from SFO they were on had just landed and moments later the bags popped out.
I know how hard it must be to locate a needle in a haystack, so I am not going to complain to UA about this incident, but I do think five hours was more than enough time to find our bag. And whenever an agent tells you that you must travel with your checked bags, just laugh.
