I have stayed at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh Airport more times than I care to count. We live in Pittsburgh and for one reason or another it always seems to make sense. Two years ago we needed three more days right at the end of the year to hold onto Diamond status, so we invited our nieces and nephews out to the airport for a pool party. Most often we are on a very early flight out in morning and the hotel is connected to the airport, it is one less hassle to stay there the night before a flight and just walk across in the morning.
Our flight was at 7:30AM and while that’s not early for some, it was of course international, slightly complex and with an infant. We should be at the airport with about an hour and a half of cushion at least (6AM). That means we need to leave our house no later than 5:30 and get up at – nope, pass. We cannot get to bed before midnight, that’s just not going to be a pleasant day.
I parked the car and we checked in. Randall was a star, I think he recognized us and why shouldn’t he? We stay there often. He offered us points or the amenity which I really appreciate because I have found that many hotels so rarely have guests choose the amenity that they don’t even offer it anymore and the points are automatically awarded. I asked him about the amenity and it was fairly standard. I chose the points but then noticed an amenity that I will have to try next time. It’s a jar of cookies and cold milk. How good is that?
We got upstairs and I have to say Randall let us know we are valued guests. The room had a foyer with a couch and was separate from the rest of the apartment. It came in handy as I had a call helping a relative out with some travel queries and I needed to shut the door so the Sherpita could go to sleep. The bathroom was standard, and that’s okay.
One thing that was odd was that there was a large dining room size table next to the window in the bedroom. One would have thought that this should go in the foyer, but perhaps it did not fit. Again though, it came in handy. I was able to use it, wrapping up some business before bed, and I actually quite liked the table. But it was still strange.
I left the door hanger out for breakfast as the hotel offers it from as early as 5:30AM and we planned on leaving at 6AM for the short walk across to the terminal building. I ordered food for all three of us to share:
- Pancakes with both maple and agave syrup with strawberries
- Eggs, bacon, and toast
- A fruit plate
- Cranberry juice
In lieu of bring able to make it down to the restaurant for breakfast, the hotel put up no fuss about us taking room service as other properties do from time to time. I selected the time of 5:45 and did not set alarms until that time. I wasn’t counting on it being there on time.
Knock, knock, knock. I was wrong and ill prepared – I answered the door, in my boxers.
The gentlemen came in, and wanted to know where to put the food, I motioned to the couch because, it was 5:44 and I hadn’t had my coffee. He didn’t question a thing, he set it on the couch in the foyer and started reading off the items on the list. All were there, all accounted for. I tipped him and thanked him and he left. I set the food on the “breakfast bar” and got my wife up for the shower. As soon as she got up so did our little one and I started to feed her while my wife got ready.
I didn’t get to eat much because we were running out of time, but if I can make one small recommendation, definitely have the pancakes. I have had a lot of bad pancakes, and it’s easy to do them wrong. You can burn them, cook them too long, not long enough. Add the delay factor from the time they get from the kitchen to our room, and my daughter and wife had already had some while I was in the shower and they were still amazing. The agave syrup was fantastic and so were the pancakes in consistency and flavor.
