A scary moment for passengers onboard a Pegasus Airlines 737-800 that skidded off the runway, down a muddy embankment, and nearly into the sea.
Check out this startling video–it honestly makes my palms sweat just watching it:
The Boeing 737-800 was traveling from Ankara (ESB), the capital of Turkey, to Trabzon (TZX), a northern Turkish province. There were 162 passengers and crew members aboard when the aircraft overshot the runway due to a “right-engine power surge.” One pilot told investigators:
When we were going to make our usual manoeuvre towards the right from the seaside by reducing our speed, the right engine suddenly gained speed for a reason we do not know.
The aircraft’s wheels became stuck in the cliff’s icy mud, likely stopping it from entering the sea. All onboard were safely evacuated.
The Daily Mail reports that the both the captain and first officer were given breathalyzer tests on the scene. Both passed.
From the video, you can see the aircraft’s right engine was ripped from the wing during the crash.
Think how scary that must have been onboard. One passenger stated–
We tilted to the side, the front was down while the plane’s rear was up. There was panic. People shouting, screaming.
The airport temporarily closed but has since re-opened. What a blessing there were no injuries. Nevertheless, talk about scary. This is one of my worst nightmares.
