My stay at the Park Hyatt Chicago was much more about the company than the property itself, but I very much appreciated the spacious suite with an excellent view of the Chicago Water Tower.
This was a special trip with my father and brother. My father grew up in Chicago and it had been many years since he had been back. After arriving from Los Angeles, we took an Uber into town, arriving about 2pm. Our suite was ready (I had applied a confirmed a suite upgrade to the reservation, which confirms into an Executive Suite). I love the lobby and common areas of this hotel:
I’ve stayed at this hotel twice now and it seems the hotel does not offer escorts up to the room like many Park Hyatt properties.
Park Hyatt Chicago Guest Room (Executive Suite)
We were assigned room 1407. The first thing I noticed was that the door stuck to the granite threshold.
The Executive Suite contains a large living room, bedroom, bathroom, and guest bathroom. The hotel was updated in 2013, but the living room frankly still looks a bit dated to me, or maybe just a bit bare. But I loved how spacious the suite was: the living room literally had room for a dozen people.
The bathroom featured dual sinks, a large tub, and fairly small shower and water closet. Like the Park Hyatt New York, this hotel uses Le Labo body wash, conditioner, and shampoo.
A shot of the guest bathroom:
Just inside the entrway, an illy espresso-pod machine and mini-bar was provisioned. The mini-bar contained an extra sink.
Great view from the living room:
Since there were three of us, we added a rollaway bed to the living room, where I slept.
From bed, I caught this great sunrise:
Park Hyatt Chicago Fitness + Pool
The well-appointed fitness center features Technogym equipment. One day I used the gym about 4pm and it was packed. Better, for me at least, to use the gym in the morning.
The indoor pool is directly adjacent to the fitness center.
Park Hyatt Chicago Breakfast
Breakfast was a treat both mornings in Michelin-starred NoMi. Globalist status at the Hyatt gives you free breakfast for yourself and one additional guest registered in your room. Our stay was in the Gold Passport Diamond days, in which breakfast was complimentary for all three of us.
Both mornings I began breakfast with fresh-squeezed orange juice and a berry smoothie, followed by a cappuccino:
The first morning, I had Bircher Muesli topped in berries followed by an omelet:
My father also had an omelet while my brother just stuck to a simpler continental breakfast of pastries, fruit, and yogurt:
On the second morning, I had a wonderful “aged cheddar scrambler” with avocado and green onions.
My brother ordered berries and my father had waffles:
If you like breakfast buffets, please note there is only a limited buffet on weekends in the NoMi and none during the week.
The NoMi dining room is beautiful:
Park Hyatt Chicago Food + Drink
NoMi is also open for lunch and dinner. NoMi bar offers beer, wine, and cocktails. Outdoor seating is available as well.
Park Hyatt Chicago Service
The first time I stayed at this hotel (2013), service was downright bad. Check-in staff was rude and simple requests like a toothbrush were ignored (never delivered to the room). The icing on the cake, however, was when I called down to the front desk to ask how late the fitness center was open and the front desk clerk suggested I call the fitness to find out…
That was my expectation going in and I’m relieved to report the service was much better this time. My interactions with staff were fairly limited, but everyone I dealt with was courteous and professional. Service in NoMi was excellent both visits, though runs on the slow side.
Upon arrival, the hotel sent up a bottle of water and three apples.
The following evening, we returned to the room to find a small bowl of strawberries:
I had a great stay at this hotel and look forward to returning. If you have Globalist status, this property also represents a great option to use one of your suite upgrades. And it goes without saying that the location of this hotel cannot be any bette for downtown Chicago.
