A teenager is in custody after attempting to rush past a security checkpoint at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. By the time he was subdued, he had injured five agents.
At 9:45 AM Tuesday morning, 19-year-old Tyrese Garner tried to rush past a swarm of agents and onto the secure side of the airport. In attempting to get through, he tackled several agents. Although it did not take long to subdue him, four agents ended up going to urgent care and one was taken to an area hospital.
Phoenix Police arrested Garner, who is being charged with a number of crimes, including:
- Criminal Trespassing
- Resisting Arrest
- Misdemeanor Assault (five counts)
The security checkpoint was closed for about two hours, but the airport continued normal operations.
Addressing the incident, the TSA released the following statement:
This unprovoked and brazen physical attack against our TSOs is unacceptable. We are grateful for our committed workforce and for the role they play in protecting the traveling public every day. We continue to monitor the safety and health of the TSOs involved in this incident and will cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.
There is no info on why the man attacked agents or whether he even held a valid airline ticket.
