Vienna is one of my favorite cities in the world, though I’ve struggled to find food that makes me say WOW. But I recently found a fabulous restaurant at a price that won’t break the bank…
We almost didn’t stop at Fabios. At first, we walked right by it. But the beautiful outdoor terrace caught my eye. It was a lovely late-summer evening in Vienna, ideal for eating outdoors.
It was 5:00PM and thankfully the dinner rush had not begun, for we had no reservation. The restaurant offered us a table on the condition we finished by 7:30PM. No problem there…this was a late-lunch with my business partner, not a date. Fabios specializes in a fusion of Italian and Mediterranean food, two of my favorite cuisines.
Although my brother mocks me for ordering them, I do love peach bellinis and I’ve never had a better one than here. The peach puree was fresh and sweet, complementing the Prosecco nicely.
I’ve been trying to skip bread courses at restaurants and on planes, but I devoured the bread here. The selection included a dark grain bread, tomato focaccia, and sourdough.
We skipped appetizers and went right for the main course. I ordered lamb cutlets served on a bed of Moroccan spicy couscous with roasted cashews. The meat was cooked perfectly and the red wine reduction sauce mixed with olive oil and fresh parsley was a great sauce for the couscous (the meat needed no sauce).
John ordered filet mignon, which was served with roasted green peppers. He gave the beef two thumbs up.
I concluded the meal with a strong cappuccino (with apologies to my Italian readers, who view cappuccino outside the breakfast window as anathema).
Fabios is a short walk from the Park Hyatt Vienna and in the heart of the old city. Do make a reservation and enjoy this wonderful Vienna restaurant.
